On being a hater

I have been wrestling with the idea of making this post for the last three months, and I finally decided to go for it. It has NOTHING to do with language teaching, and I need to request a HUGE portion of grace from you as I post it. I do NOT want to take advantage of your interest in learning more about language acquisition and language teaching. Please know that it is not my intent! This post is about my new business, and after much unrest I have decided to share my story here.

Please stop reading now if you don’t want to know about it, and I’ll be back to language business as usual tomorrow 🙂

My story:

I have always been a total social marketing hater. I hate getting invited to parties because I hate feeling obligated to buy things that I don’t want. I hate feeling like my friends are only trying to connect with me so that they can earn free product or build their business. I hate scrolling through Facebook and seeing marketing posts instead of personal posts. Hate hate hate, I am a hater.

Well then this crazy thing happened! I found a product that solved a problem for me. Every time I have a baby, my hair falls out. (This is common—not unique to me!) So after six rapid-fire pregnancies, my ponytail was less than a 1/2 inch in diameter. I had SO little hair, and the hair that I had was brittle and greasy. I started using the product and saw amazing results within just a few weeks—my hair stopped falling out, and new hair was growing in! My hair wasn’t breaking, wasn’t dry, wasn’t greasy. MAGIC!! I was a happy customer, and I was content to be just a customer. With five kids and The Comprehensible Classroom, my time is precious. I had zero interest in starting a new business because any extra time that I can eek out of my schedule could go to this blog and answering emails–which is what I LOVE!!

So why couldn’t I shake the idea of enrolling as a Market Partner? I made a list of all the people I know that might be looking for an opportunity like this. I called all of them, and NO ONE said “yes!” Finally, my husband told me, “Martina, you can’t expect anyone to do something that you aren’t doing yourself”. Ew. The idea made me queasy! I HATE sales! I hate the way that my salespeople-friends make me feel! I prayed about it, I made a decision, and…I went for it.

Three months in, and I am completely OBSESSED with my new business. Why?? The organization that I joined is just three years old. There are fewer than 50,000 Market Partners across the US and Canada (by comparison, there are more than 3,000,000 Mary Kay Consultants). There are literally TWO individuals in the state of Vermont actively working their businesses. NO ONE KNOWS about this product!! Think about all of the amazing products that have been brought to market through social marketing: Plexus (gut health), DoTerra or Young Living (essential oils), BeautyCounter (natural skincare/make-up)…the list goes on and on! Someone was the first person to say “YES” and bring those products to market. Someone’s live has been transformed because they said “YES”–and I want that someone to be someone I know!! We know that, oftentimes, the most successful individuals in any business are the ones that are there first!

I am OBSESSED with how this product is changing lives, and I am OBSESSED with what this opportunity can do for my team members. I realized that all of my social marketing hatred was a ME problem, not a THEM problem. It came from my insecurity, my envy, my mean spirit—not from theirs. My friends aren’t trying to live extravagant lives; they are just trying to LIVE and to share a solution for a problem that their friends (me) might be experiencing. My friends are sharing because they are EXCITED–and I am excited too! I finally get it.

My husband is CEO of a Real Estate team here in VT, and his career is built on identifying, hiring, and training new agents. I am a teacher, and one of my greatest strengths is the ability to help other teachers duplicate and implement the things that have helped me. I have been experiencing Matt’s coaching conversations for years. Teaching is my passion, and I realized that this business is teaching–only the content changes. Matt and I are excited to see whose lives will be transformed through this opportunity!! I am excited to find and equip a team of individuals that are ready to do whatever it takes to realize their dreams!

If anything that I said here resonates with you, please reach out to me at my personal email address, martinaebex@gmail.com.

Good luck in your endeavor. I hope we teachers don’t lose you to “downlines,” “double digit recruiting,” and the like. When you become successful and have a big “base shop,” it may be hard to walk away. The difference you have made in FL is immense. Maybe it’s time for you to have that impact somewhere else in the world. No one would bet against Martina Bex!

thanks for sharing. I was curious to know what your new business involved and why get into something you weren’t comfortable with.

I am also a Market Partner for this same company and LOVE their products and their company. Go you Martina!

From a fellow small business owner (who also has a spouse who sells essential oils in her “spare” time): BEST OF LUCK!

Martina, I wouldn’t worry about imposing on others with this post. As much as you have contributed to our community, and as gracefully as you make those contributions, I’d be wary of anyone who had a problem with it. 🙂 God Bless you and your family, from my family in Nebraska.
