Destiny: MovieTalk

Sa-weet! I’ve found a good film to use for MovieTalk in my Cierra la puerta unit! Check it out! It provides lots of repetitions of the structures because of the repetitive nature of the plot. It’s also great for ordinal numbers and house and home vocab. I’ve written out the basic Spanish and English scripts below. If you have never heard of MovieTalk, click here to read about it and watch a demo.

Spanish Script:

  1. What a video! You don’t mention the lightening strike…weird video. But I love weird! Question…you have been doing a lot of MT, but I am just starting. I struggle to keep the kids’ attention. I don’t know if I am just boring or what (probably!). Any hints?

    1. What lightening strike? I don’t see one in the video?? Keep the clips short. This is longer than most videos I would use–usually just 2-4 minutes is what works for my students. The clip has to be interesting, and you have to just experiment until you find the perfect balance between circling and personalizing and otherwise ‘parking’ on a paused scene and boring the kids to death. Get in your repetitions, but don’t pause the film at any one spot for TOO long unless there are a lot of interesting things to talk about. Just keep practicing, and I am confident that you will get the hang of it!

      1. Oh! Watch through the credits…to the VERY end. 🙂

Thanks for the hints. I will keep at it. This is a great video for repetition…it will sound more natural than with some videos.

  2. I would change “ruedas dentadas” for relojes acuerda or relojes de pared acuerda. But awesome. I saw this video and love it. Thanks.

  3. Great video and transcript! The best part of this video is that the story has the repetition already built in!
My students always need additional reps of relexives and I can get a lot of repetitions of se despertó, se levantò, and se cayó. At the end I let the credits scroll and casually stand back and wait for the last reaction from the students.

Thanks for sharing your script, Martina. I’ll use a past tense version of your script for a reading activity after the video, possibly a homework reading assignment to a parent.

More resources, more ideas; exactly why I love reading language teacher blogs! 😊 (good PD and a time-saver too)

  4. This has a lot of new vocabulary. The unit cierra la puerta is taught at level one early in the school year. How do you deal with so many new vocabulary?

    1. The idea with MovieTalk is that it is okay to use structures that students do not know because you are pointing to the image of those objects or of that action on the screen. While students’ understanding may not be 100 percent accurate (as is the case when you provide them with translations), it is usually close enough that they can follow along with the story. Focus your circling on the target structures/familiar vocabulary, but allow students to hear new terms as you point to the images. Inevitably, they will walk away remembering something that stood out to them personally–you would never want to assess on new vocab that had just been mentioned in MovieTalk, but it’s a great way to differentiate and challenge everyone at their level. Different students will take away different things (vocab, structural/grammatical concepts, etc.).

  5. Awesome reply!! It makes so much sense. Thanks. I can see how some of my students who already know the structures inside and out can learn from the new vocabulary and how those still struggling can have those structures reinforced. I will try it tomorrow. Thanks again!

      1. Elena; I agree with Martina. These activities are great. I have tried to open your downloads but can’t due to my computer not being up to date. I have tried to convert to the newer Microsoft but it will not open your documents. Would you know how to send it to me in another form? I absolutely love what you have done with these Martina’s activities. I am going to have to get computer savy like the two of you.

I would be more than happy to send you the files in a different format. Tell me what version you need them in and where to send them.
