Visuals Database

Here is the link to a visuals database for world language classrooms, created by the University of Pittsburg. It has zillions of uses, one of which could be selecting one image to use as a class prompt for a universal screener or other writing or speaking assessment. You could print out one and leave it as part of a sub plan: students must work individually or in groups to create dialogues, descriptions, songs, quizzes, etc. based on the picture.

  1. I really like this! I usually do a journal every Friday over something that we’ve been working on (learning targets for that specific week). Would this be considered the same thing? Usually I give them a prompt such as the following: “You want to introduce yourself to a new classmate from Spain via email. In your email, be sure to greet the person (Carlos/Maria), introduce yourself, tell where you are from, tell what your birthday is and then say goodbye”.

    This would obviously be prepping them for the presentational writing portion of their summative assessment which might be very similar in nature.

    If you were to assign points to your rubric, what would they be?

    • You could definitely use the database for that purpose! I will use it for graded writing assignments in specific units as the year wares on, but I plan to use the same classroom image each quarter simply as an ungraded screener. If I were to assign points to it, I would use the rubric that I posted in my post “proficiency targets”, which you should be able to find it if you search for that term on my site. Let me know if you can’t find it!
